A recent facelift has done nothing to disguise the rugged Discovery’s Tonka toy proportions. The nose gets new headlamps and grille, while at the rear you’ll find revised tail-lights. As ever, the big Brit looks just as at home in a farmer’s field as it does outside a posh hotel Buyers get the choice of three trim levels – GS, XS and HSE. Externally there’s little to separate the models, although the entry-level 2.7-litre GS gets 18-inch alloys in place of the 19-inch items on other versions. There’s also the option of a Commercial version that is stripped of its back seats and fitted with darkened rear windows.
Interior/Practicality
With such vast external dimensions it’s no surprise to fine the Disco has a spacious cabin. All versions get seven-seats, all of which will comfortably accommodate adults. The third row folds into the boot floor when not needed, leaving a useful 1,192 carrying capacity. Land Rover’s designers have been at work inside, with a revised dashboard, instruments, switchgear and steering wheel. All models come loaded with standard kit, including climate control, a heated windscreen and air suspension. Range-topping HSE trim adds touch screen sat-nav, a rear-view camera, electric seats and mood lighting.
Engine/Performance
Only two engines are available – the existing 2.7-litre V6 twin turbo diesel and new, more powerful 3.0-litre version. The smaller unit is only available in the entry-level GS and is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, while all other versions get the larger powerplant and smooth shifting six-ratio automatic transmission. Both the oil-burners major on refinement, though with a massive 600Nm of torque the 3.0-litre engine feels much more eager on the move – the sprint from 0-60mph takes 9.0 seconds.
Driving experience
What is most striking about the Discovery is its supple ride. The combination of air-suspension and a 2.5 ton kerbweight allows the Land Rover to steamroller even the poorest road surfaces. It feels surprisingly agile through corners too, thanks in part to its light controls, commanding driving position and great visibility. However, the big SUV really comes into its own when you hit the rough stuff. With its hi-tech terrain response four-wheel drive transmission, huge ground clearance and torquey engine the Discovery is virtually unstoppable off-road.
Ownership Costs
Even an entry-level Discovery is expensive to buy, while running costs are likely to be equally steep. On the plus side, residuals for all models are over 44 percent, meaning you shouldn’t be in for any nasty surprises when it’s time to trade-in. The new 3.0-litre engine should prove most cost effective to run. Its CO2 emissions of 244g/km and fuel returns of 30.4mpg are significant improvements over the old 2.7-litre automatic gearbox equipped car. Even so, you can expect to pay £405 for an annual tax disc.
Safety/Environment
Eight airbags feature as standard on the Discovery, including curtain items for the third row of seats. Elsewhere you get clever roll and stability control systems. Interior/Practicality
With such vast external dimensions it’s no surprise to fine the Disco has a spacious cabin. All versions get seven-seats, all of which will comfortably accommodate adults. The third row folds into the boot floor when not needed, leaving a useful 1,192 carrying capacity. Land Rover’s designers have been at work inside, with a revised dashboard, instruments, switchgear and steering wheel. All models come loaded with standard kit, including climate control, a heated windscreen and air suspension. Range-topping HSE trim adds touch screen sat-nav, a rear-view camera, electric seats and mood lighting.
Engine/Performance
Only two engines are available – the existing 2.7-litre V6 twin turbo diesel and new, more powerful 3.0-litre version. The smaller unit is only available in the entry-level GS and is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, while all other versions get the larger powerplant and smooth shifting six-ratio automatic transmission. Both the oil-burners major on refinement, though with a massive 600Nm of torque the 3.0-litre engine feels much more eager on the move – the sprint from 0-60mph takes 9.0 seconds.
Driving experience
What is most striking about the Discovery is its supple ride. The combination of air-suspension and a 2.5 ton kerbweight allows the Land Rover to steamroller even the poorest road surfaces. It feels surprisingly agile through corners too, thanks in part to its light controls, commanding driving position and great visibility. However, the big SUV really comes into its own when you hit the rough stuff. With its hi-tech terrain response four-wheel drive transmission, huge ground clearance and torquey engine the Discovery is virtually unstoppable off-road.
Ownership Costs
Even an entry-level Discovery is expensive to buy, while running costs are likely to be equally steep. On the plus side, residuals for all models are over 44 percent, meaning you shouldn’t be in for any nasty surprises when it’s time to trade-in. The new 3.0-litre engine should prove most cost effective to run. Its CO2 emissions of 244g/km and fuel returns of 30.4mpg are significant improvements over the old 2.7-litre automatic gearbox equipped car. Even so, you can expect to pay £405 for an annual tax disc.
Safety/Environment
Eight airbags feature as standard on the Discovery, including curtain items for the third row of seats. Elsewhere you get clever roll and stability control systems. The former throttles back the engine and engages the anti-lock brakes if it senses the car is going to flip over. You’d struggle to call the 3.0-litre V6 eco-friendly, although its CO2 emissions of 240g/km are a 30g/km reduction over the 2.7-litre unit. On top of this, Land Rover runs a carbon offset scheme that covers the first 45,000 miles use of every car it makes.

If you think your dreams of having a flash compact executive model parked on the driveway will be thwarted by high list prices and running costs, it’s time for a quick reappraisal. As if BMW’s range of EfficientDynamics models wasn’t clean enough, the new 316d has lower emissions and prices than ever.

In our braking tests, the BMW took 54.9 metres to stop from 70mph – 7.5 metres longer than the A4. This is at odds with the rest of the dynamic package, which includes a precise gearbox and communicative steering. The 316d’s supple suspension also delivers good ride comfort. Company car drivers will welcome the BMW’s cosseting set-up, while its low emissions are an even greater attraction. Benefit in kind tax is only 13 per cent, and the BMW is also cheaper than the Audi to buy and run.
With its fuel-efficient engine, an enjoyable rear-drive chassis, comfortable interior and low running costs, the 316d doesn’t feel like a compromised eco machine – can the Audi pull off a similar trick?

Mustang fans have been nagging Ford Motor Co. for a better V6 engine in the base model of the long-running pony car--one with more horsepower and less hoarse power.
Next spring they'll get it when the old 4.0-liter V6 is replaced by a 3.7-liter, 305-hp, 24-valve V6 with double overhead cams. It's the Mustang's first high-performance six-cylinder engine.
The old, rough, 210-hp V6--which has been built in various displacements since the late 1960s--couldn't compete with the 3.6-liter V6 in the new Chevrolet Camaro.
The base version of the 2011 Ford Mustang, due in the spring, noses ahead of the 2010 Camaro V6--but not by much. The Mustang has one more horsepower and one more highway mile per gallon than the Camaro.
The 3.7-liter engine in the base 2011 Mustang is also being used in several front-wheel- and all-wheel-drive Lincolns. The Mustang is the first rear-wheel-drive application.
To boost horsepower, the intake areas of the engine's heads were ported and polished to increase the volume of the air-fuel mixture. The valve tappets were polished to reduce friction. A new intake manifold improves engine breathing. The changes helped raise horsepower from 273 in the Lincoln MKS to 305.
The Mustang also gets these upgrades:
-- Two new six-speed transmissions, automatic and manual.
-- Stronger brakes and firmer suspension from the GT model.
-- A slightly revised interior with a new roof storage system.
The updated engine includes such fuel-saving technology as variable valve timing and an advanced fuel injection system that cuts off the fuel supply when the car is decelerating.
The old engine was built in Cologne, Germany, and shipped to Flat Rock, Mich., where it was installed in the Mustang. The new engine is built in Ford's Cleveland plant.
Camaro sales have exceeded the Mustang's for six straight months. General Motors Co. thinks the Camaro will outsell the Mustang for the entire year, although through October the Mustang still led, 56,469 to 47,233. The Camaro went on sale in April.

OUR TAKE: Call the Edge the perfect next progression from a tradition that started with the Ford Country Squire station wagon and continued with the long-lasting Ford Explorer sport-utility vehicle. Like its predecessors, the Edge is just right in so many ways for most families' needs.
For our part, we recently took the Edge on a family weekend road trip, where it provided the right mix of size without overdoing it (no need for the third row), the right amount of roadworthiness (even in a snow squall), and the right features to fit our needs--such as the heated, blue-insert, blue-stitched seats that gave the interior a sporty and upscale look while providing the right comfort.
On top of its just-rightness, the Edge is also one of the best-built, quietest, smoothest-riding vehicles we've been in lately, including some that cost two and three times as much, and many from makers whose reputations exceed their reality. So while the Edge isn't edgy by any stretch, it's a darn good option in an increasingly crowded segment, and one that certainly deserves a look.

Here is another super power : the new Mercedes AMG SLS E-Drive, which will debut in 2012. To give the news, Volker Mornhinweg, CEO of AMG, during a recent press conference. The unique car was presented for the first time at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show last September. Now even the electric supercar have come out of our imagination to enter into our daily lives. The first was to make a stir, a few months ago, the Tesla Roadster and one of the last to be announced was the Audi R4, futuristic evolution of E-Tron.
And the AMG Mercedes SLS, a few days ago won the recognition "Golden Steering Wheel" - "Golden Steering Wheel 2009 - will have its zero-emissions version. His numbers will always shudder: four electric motors - one for each wheel of the SLS - a total of 533 horsepower provided. His performances have nothing to envy to the petrol variant.
The new SLS AMG Mercedes E-Drive will be capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km / h in under 4 seconds and has a top speed similar to that declared for the other model. The battery life will allow casual use at the car, reaching 180 kilometers total.
This unique engine "combined" born from the same factories Mercedes; to develop it, the Deutsche Accumotive GmbH, a company founded by the partnership between Daimler and Evonik Industries AG.
